CAUSES OF SELF INJURY
Psychiatric or emotional stress is the major cause. The risk factors are:
- Genetic reasons
- Certain medications

- Problems in family or workplace
- Substance abuse
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF SELF INJURY
Although there is considerable evidence for a preeminent role for three monoamine systems serotonin (5HT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA), in the pathogenesis of self-injury associated with depressive disorders. Depression involves other circuits including neuropeptide systems such as corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and glutamate and GABA circuits. Self-injury is also associated with anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
