SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SELF INJURY

  • Scratching of body
  • Cuts and wounds in the body
  • Rubbing or hitting of body parts
  • Burning with heated objects, cigarettes etc
  • Withdrawing from family and friends
  • Intense irritability
  • Impulsivity
  • Emotional instability
  • Associated with anxiety or depression

CAUSES OF SELF INJURY

Psychiatric or emotional stress is the major cause. The risk factors are:

  • Genetic reasons
  • Certain medications
  • Sadful events in life
  • Problems in family or workplace
  • Substance abuse

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF SELF INJURY

Although there is considerable evidence for a preeminent role for three monoamine systems serotonin (5HT), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine (DA), in the pathogenesis of self-injury associated with depressive disorders. Depression involves other circuits including neuropeptide systems such as corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and glutamate and GABA circuits. Self-injury is also associated with anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  • Intense irritability may be found as an initial symptom.

The vitiated doshas first affect budhi and smrti which are located in the heart, and then travel to manas through the srota-which may be viewed as a functional circulatory or nervous system, leading to irritability in the manas (mind).
