SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Thickening of skin
  • Scaly patches
  • Red coloured bumps
  • Commonly occur in the palms and foot
  • Corns or callus formation in the foot
  • Eczema
  • Leukoplakia in mouth

CAUSES OF HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Repeated skin irritations
  • The pressure exerted on the skin especially in the foot
  • Inflammations
  • Infections
  • Other skin diseases

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF HYPERKERATOSIS

Continuous pressure exerted on the skin produces inflammatory changes and thickening of the outer layer of skin, this layer consist of a skin protein called ‘keratin’. This occurs, particularly on the palms and feet. 

DIAGNOSIS OF HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Laboratory tests – to detect the underlying pathology or infections

TREATMENTS FOR HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Laser treatment
  • Cryosurgery
  • Corticosteroid ointments
  • Anti-inflammatory medications

PROGNOSIS OF HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Generally, hyperkeratosis is manageable with medications
  • Actinic keratoses may develop into squamous cell skin cancer

COMPLICATIONS OF HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Untreated hyperkeratosis become painful
  • Psychosocial problems

HYPERKERATOSIS AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, hyperkeratosis falling under ‘charma kushta’.
  • According to Ayurveda, twakrogas are known by the general term Kushta. Charma kushta is one of the types of Kshudra Kushta. General medicines used for the treatment of skin diseases (kushta) are effective in hyperkeratosis.

 NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF HYPERKERATOSIS

  • Excess consumption of dry, oily, unctuous food
  • Vitiation of dosha and dhatus
  • Exposure to skin irritants
  • Agantu factors – infections

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind  and provide overall immunity and healthy skin

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
