SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF GALLSTONES 

  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Fatigue
  • Yellow discolouration in the skin, mucous membrane, sclera
  • Right abdominal pain

  • Pain in the shoulder
  • Clay coloured stools

CAUSES OF GALLSTONES 

  • Family history
  • High cholesterol-containing diet
  • Excess secretion of bilirubin
  • Hormonal changes
  • Obstruction in the bile duct

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF GALLSTONES 

If there is increased cholesterol secretion and decreased bile acid secretion, supersaturation of bile occurs. Leads to the precipitation of secretions along with cholesterol in the gall bladder gradually gall stones are manifested.

DIAGNOSIS OF GALLSTONES 

  • Blood test
  • Liver function test
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound)
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan, or computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan

  • Surgery(Cholecystectomy)
  • Cholesterol-lowering agents

 

PROGNOSIS OF GALLSTONES 

  • Prognosis is based on the cause of the gall stone, size and condition of the patient

  • Obstructive jaundice
  • Inflammation of the gallbladder(cholecystitis)

GALLSTONES AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, gallstones are managed based on the treatment principle of ‘rudhapadha kamala’ and ‘pittasmari’.
  • It is considered as a yakrit vikara.

 

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF GALLSTONES 

  • Excess consumption of sour food
  • Excess aggravation of pitta dosha
  • Rudhapadha – obstruction in the bile duct

 

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF GALLSTONES 

  • Asymptomatic in early stages

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF GALLSTONES 

  • In the case of rudhapadha kamala there is an obstruction in the bile duct, who eliminates faeces resembling the paste of sesame seed, the path of pitta being blocked by kapha.

LAKSHANA- AYURVEDIC SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF GALLSTONES 

  • Sula – abdominal pain
  • Chardi – vomiting
  • Avipaka – indigestion
  • Pale stools

  • Avoid high cholesterol diet

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – refresh the body and mind

 

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
