PANCHAGAVYA GHRUTHAM

Panchagavya ghrutham is an Ayurvedic medicine for epilepsy and psychotic disorders. It is also used in many conditions of obstructive jaundice cases.

 

Benefits of Panchagavya ghrutham

It is useful in many psychiatric disorders like anxiety disorder, mania, depression, bipolar disorder etc. It is beneficial even in complete psychotic patients with aggression.

It is used to treat epilepsy, anaemia, jaundice and other hepatic disorders, chronic & recurrent fever etc.

It is especially beneficial in depression cases. As it opens the channels and removes sluggishness the mood & affect of the person becomes better and stable. It clears the mind and thoughts.  It is found beneficial in mental retardation, developmental disorders, learning disability, ADHD, and speech disorders.

It improves the digestive fire. It is useful in indigestion, low appetite, fatigue and laziness. It is useful in many dhatugata jwara conditions and auto immune disorders where channels in the body gets obstructed.

This combination is explained as a medhya yoga which improves brain functions and speech.

In the traditional Ayurveda, this combination is used for epilepsy, chronic & recurrent fever, speech disorders, memory loss and poor intellect.

It improves the quality of speech. It works on both structural and functional issues related to speech. As it has an effect on the mind and mood of the person, it improves confidence of the person.

There is an old tradition in Kerala (Daivavyapasraya chikithsa) to take “Mantrapoota” ghrutham (ghrutham worshipped with specific mantras) in early morning after bath and prayer. It needs to be done with strict Pthya like only vegetarian diet. Panchagavya ghrutham is one of the combinations used in this manner for small kids to improve brain functions and speech. It is given as an offering in some temples.

It is used in children with special needs after proper de-worming and Amapaachana. It improves memory, concentration, language and communication skills. It boosts memory.

Ingredients of Panchagavya ghrutham  

Cow dung water Gomaya swarasa
Cow’s milk Goksheera
Curd Dadhi
Cow’s urine Gomootra
Cow’s ghee Ghruta

Details of the manufacturing

As already discussed, Panchagavya ghrutham has only 5 ingredients. No kalkadravya mentioned.

For preparation of this ghrithakalpana,

We use

  • Snehadravya

(Cow’s ghee)                                  – 1 part

  • Dravadravya

Cow dung water                            – 1 part

Cow’s milk                                      -1 part

Curd                                                 – 1 part

Cow’s urine                                    – 1 part

Take the prescribed ingredients and ghee in an earthen pot.  Make it boil and then cook in the open vessel with low fire. Reduce the quantity into the quantity of ghrutha. Make sure to mix it in between with a ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Continue cooking and stir in between. Check the Paaka as per Snehapakavidhi. Once the desired Paaka is attained, filter the ghruta and keep it in air tight glass bottles after cooling. Ghrutha can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives. 

Dosha Dooshya Predominance with roga marga.

Panchagavya ghrutham is Kapha-Vaata hara and medhya.

It acts on aabhyantara, baahya and madhyama rogamargas.

Dosage and Usage of Panchagavya ghrutham

Dosage:

Depends upon the digestive power of the person. Usually it is given 15g-20g in the early morning, daily in an adult person with good appetite and digestion as samanasneha.

Usage:

When used as Samanasneha, Ghrutham is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and when the person has appetite.

Usage of ghrutham with prescribed prakshepadravyas according to the condition of disease and the patient gives the best results mostly.

Exercises and Yoga.

As Panchagavya ghrutham targets mainly the obstructed channels in the body, a routine of sweating and exercises are advised. Also, specific Yogacharya including naadisuddhi pranayama, bhujangaasana, is recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve the bioavailability of medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within the body and with the surrounding system.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

junk foods- cause a disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening Agni (digestive fire)

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases

Light meals and easily digestible foods.

Drinking water boiled with dried ginger.

Green gram, soups, milk, ghee, fruits and vegetables, dry fruits and nuts in moderate quantity.

freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain, etc

Behavior:

 

Avoid stress.

Protect yourself from an extreme hot & cold climate.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight, wind, rain, or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid holding or forcing urges like urine, faeces, cough, sneeze, etc.

Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Be active.

 

Side effects and contraindications

No known side effects reported.

 

Contraindication

People with derangement in fat metabolism; may it be Hyperlipidaemia or obesity or hypercholesteremia or atherosclerosis or hypertension. Most of these, associated with weak digestion, too. In such people, the ghee preparation may worsen the condition rather than curing it. But the same herbs in a water-soluble form in the decoction can act as the cure for many such derangements, even for hypercholesterolemia.
