Satadhoutaghrutham is an Ayurvedic medicine for skin diseases and improving complexion. As the name suggests, it is hundred times washed ghee.

Benefits of Satadhoutaghrutham

The formulation of Satadhoutaghrutam is explained in Charakasamhita Kushthachikithsa but it is advised for external application.

Satadhoutaghrutam is used mostly as an external application. It helps to reduce inflammation, heal the wounds and bring back normal skin.

It is very effective in chronic skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, and atopic dermatitis.

It is found beneficial in healing diabetic wounds and gangrene. Also, chronic & non-healing ulcers, abscesses, and sinus wounds.

Satadhoutaghrutam being pacifying Pitta dosha, it is used in inflammations of eyelid like stye, chalazion etc. It is beneficia in skin rashes and inflammation with redness, burning sensation and pain.

It is advised for Baalavisarpa(allergic eczema or infective skin rashes in children)

Indications of Satadhoutaghrutham

Paittika Kushtha              – Skin diseases where redness, raised temperature and burning sensation are   evident.

 Ingredients of Satadhoutaghrutam

Nalpamara, a combination famous for its wound healing properties. It is also very good for skin and complexion. It is the bark of four trees namely 

Banyan tree Nyagrodha Ficus benghalensis Linn.

 It has astringent, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, diaphoretic, anti-diarrheal, anti-emetic, anti-microbial and immune-modulatory properties.

Fig tree Udumbara Ficus racemose Linn.

It has hypoglycaemic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, antidiuretic, and renal anticarcinogenic activities.

It is used in the treatment of diabetes, liver disorders, diarrhoea, inflammatory conditions, haemorrhoids, respiratory and urinary diseases.

Sacred fig tree Aswattha Ficus religiosa Linn.

It has anti-ulcer, anti-bacterial and anti-diabetic properties. It is used in the treatment of gonorrhoea and many skin diseases, asthma, diabetes, diarrhoea, epilepsy, gastric problems, inflammatory disorders, infectious disorders and sexual disorders. The results of few pharmacological studies already reported its potential against cancer, cardiovascular disorders, neuroinflammatory disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, oxidative stress related disorders and parasitic infections.

Dyed fig Plaksha Ficus macrocarpa L.fil. or Ficus tinctoria

It is used in the treatment of diabetes, ulcers, burning sensations, haemorrhages, leprosy, itching, liver diseases and toothache.

Indian madder Manjishtha Rubia cordifolia L.

It is a blood purifier. Used in the treatments of almost all skin diseases. It improves complexion. It enhances the liver functions.  Beneficial in diarrhoea and eye diseases.

Details of the manufacturing

Satadhoutaghrutham is basically hundred times washed ghee and it doesn’t contain any other herbs or ingredients as per the reference. It doesn’t need any heating process also. As per the textual reference, the ghee is taken in room temperature, washed or mixed well with clean water in room temperature. Once it forms a colloidal form and the temperature raises naturally, the remaining water is filtered out and discarded. Again, fresh water is added and the procedure is repeated hundred times for satadhoutaghruta.

But for manufacturing units, while marketing in a large quantity, the contents and method of preparation is changed for longer shelf life and better efficacy.

All these ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

For preparation of ghrithakalpana,

We use

  • Snehadravya (Cow’s ghee) – 1 part
  • Dravadravya – 6 parts

Decoction of Manjishtha

  • Kalkadravya (For making paste, ¼ parts)

Take the prescribed ghruta in an earthen pot.  Make it boil and then cook in the open vessel with low fire. After boiling, add Manjishtha decoction. Mix well and boil continuously. Lastly add Kalkadravya and mix well. Reduce the quantity into the quantity of ghrutha. Make sure to mix it in between with a ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water. Continue cooking and stir in between. Check the Paaka as per Snehapakavidhi. Once the desired Paaka is attained, filter the ghruta. Repeat the whole process hundred times. After completion filter the ghruta into a pot and keep it in air tight glass bottles after cooling. Ghrutha can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

Exercises and Yoga.

 

As Satadhoutaghrutham targets mainly infections, only mild exercises are advised. But when this combination is used for skin diseases, relaxing & cooling exercises and meditation are advised. Also, specific Yogacharya including nadisuddhi pranayama, suryanamaskara, bhujangaasana, is recommended.

Regular exercise helps improve the bioavailability of medicine and food ingested and leads to positive health.

Yoga can maintain harmony within the body and with the surrounding system.

Recommended diet and behaviour

Diet:

  • To be avoided

Heavy meals and difficult to digest foods – cause indigestion.

junk foods- cause a disturbance in digestion and reduces the bioavailability of the medicine

carbonated drinks – makes the stomach more acidic and disturbed digestion

refrigerated and frozen foods – causes weak and sluggish digestion by weakening Agni (digestive fire)

Milk and milk products – increase Kapha and cause respiratory problems

curd – causes vidaaha and thereby many other diseases.

Green gram, soups.

freshly cooked and warm food processed with cumin seeds, ginger, black pepper, ajwain, etc

Behavior:

Protect yourself from too much heat and cold.

Better to avoid exposure to excessive sunlight, wind, rain, or dust.

Maintain a regular food and sleep schedule.

Avoid stress.

Avoid sedentary lifestyle. Be active.

Avoid holding or forcing urges like urine, faeces, cough, sneeze, etc.

Avoid sleeping late night.
