PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF ITCHING

Due to the causative factors irritation in the skin occurs. The feeling of itching on the skin arises due to stimulation of pruriceptors by mechanical, thermal or chemical mediators. Histamine involved in the pathogenesis of pruritoceptive itch.

DIAGNOSIS OF ITCHING

  • Itching is diagnosed by the proper inspection of the site.
  • Laboratory tests to find out the underlying pathology

TREATMENTS FOR ITCHING

  • Topical steroids
  • Phototherapy
  • Antihistamines
  • Antibiotics – itching due to bacterial infection

PROGNOSIS OF ITCHING

  • The prognosis is based on the pathophysiology of itching.

ITCHING AND AYURVEDA

  • In Ayurveda, itching is called ‘kandu’. It is the symptom of many skin diseases like vicharchika, kitibha, vipadika, dadru etc.

 

NIDANA- AYURVEDIC CAUSES OF ITCHING

  • Overexposure to allergens (agantu factors)
  • Over vitiation of kapha dosha
  • Virudhahara (incompatible food)

 

PURVAROOPAM- AYURVEDIC PREMONITORY SYMPTOMS OF ITCHING

  • Irritation in the skin with or without an external factor

 

SAMPRAPTI – AYURVEDIC PATHOGENESIS OF ITCHING

Due to the causative factors, dosha becomes vitiated predominantly kapha and pitta and further vitiates the rakta dhatu . This causes an uncomfortable sensation in the skin in the form of itching.

  • Intake of gooseberry – cools the body
  • Moisturizing cream application

DIET AND BEHAVIOUR FOR ITCHING

  • Avoid food items which produce dosha imbalance like cold, acrid, sour and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Intake of proper amounts of fluids
  • Avoid more intake of black gram, jaggery, fish
  • In the case of infections, towels are not shared with others

YOGA FOR ITCHING

  • Nadi shuddi pranayam – calms the mind and cools the body

 

Il paziente deve essere seduto in posizione meditativa con la testa e la colonna vertebrale erette e il corpo rilassato. Il paziente deve chiudere una narice (ad esempio la sinistra se si usa la mano destra e viceversa) con il pollice ed espirare completamente attraverso l'altra narice. Di nuovo, dovrà inspirare profondamente attraverso l'altra narice mentre la narice opposta è ancora chiusa con il pollice.
