A polyp is defined as any mass protruding into the lumen of a hollow viscus. Colon polyps are the clumps of cells that form on the lining of the colon. Most are harmless, but some can develop into cancer.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF COLON POLYPS

Healthy cells grow and divide in an orderly way. Mutations in certain genes can cause cells to continue dividing even when new cells aren’t needed. In the colon, this unregulated growth can cause polyps to form. Polyps can develop anywhere in your large intestine.

DIAGNOSIS OF COLON POLYPS

  • Faecal occult blood testing – (FOBT) may indicate bleeding from a colonic polyp.

·       Colonoscopy is the ‘gold standard’ method of detecting intra-luminal colonic lesions.

·       Computed tomographic colonography

·       Magnetic resonance colonography (MRC)

·       Faecal DNA and antigen testing

TREATMENTS OF COLON POLYPS

·       Endoscopic forceps polypectomy

·       Endoscopic snare polypectomy is the preferred way to remove a polyp

·       Endoscopic submucosal dissection – (ESD) is a technique for resecting sessile polyps that are not amenable to snare polypectomy.

·       Surgery 

PROGNOSIS OF COLON POLYPS

  • It is curable and the symptoms are manageable in the early stage of the disease.
  • The earlier polyps are removed, the less likely will become malignant.

COMPLICATIONS OF COLON POLYPS

  • Bleeding and perforation
  • Some colon polyps may become cancerous

  • In Ayurveda, a colon polyp can be managed based on the principle of arsas.
