Sleep, or Nidra, is one of the most important pillars of life. According to Ayurvedic principles, quality sleep restores the body, balances the doshas, and supports mental clarity. As we move forward with our day-to-day lives, it may be hard to achieve restorative sleep. It can be a challenge to establish a good daily routine for our wellness. 

In an Ayurvedic daily routine, there are actually two daily cycles: Sun cycle and Moon cycle. According to it, the Moon cycle is between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. During this period, we should rest and reflect. As the sun’s energy diminishes, we shall transition into a sense of calm and prepare for restorative sleep. 

The evening is considered a sacred time to slow down, allowing our minds and bodies to decompress from the day’s activities.

  • Align with Nature. As the day winds down, our body naturally shifts into a state of relaxation. It’s ideal to engage in calming practices that promote serenity at this time.
  • Create a Winding Down Ritual. A soothing evening routine is essential. These practices help signal the body that it’s time to unwind, reducing the effects of stress and preparing for sleep.
  • Mindful Eating Practices. It’s ideal to eat dinner at least two hours before you sleep. Dinner should also be a lighter meal. Opt for easily digestible foods that help prevent discomfort during sleep. This allows the body to focus on rejuvenation rather than digestion.

  • Kapha Dosha. Kapha types are heavy and stable. They may struggle with lethargy or a tendency to sleep too deeply.

Vata Type Evening Practices

Enjoy a light, hydrating meal at least 2 hours before bed. Cooling foods such as cucumbers and coconut help balance your fiery nature. 

3. Cooling Tea

Herbal teas like peppermint or cucumber can help cool Pitta. It’s best not to use hot water for Pitta.

4. Warm Bath

A bath at night with warm and essential oils promotes the best relaxation. Add essential oils like lavender or chamomile. They also provide a soothing scent that can last the whole night.

Kapha Type Evening Practices 

Stimulating practices are beneficial for invigorating Kapha in the evening. This makes you more alert and helps you prepare for bed.

Gentle but invigorating exercises, such as brisk walking or light dancing, stimulate energy! Engaging in these combat lethargy and sluggish energy. If you don’t feel like walking or dancing, try dynamic yoga or stretching.

3. Essential Oils

Common Practices for All Doshas

2. Meditation and Pranayama

Spend a few minutes in meditation or deep breathing exercises (Pranayama). These center your thoughts and promote relaxation. Pranayama helps reduce stress as well, so it’s a great addition to your routine. 

Although meditation is highly recommended for Vata types and Pranayama for Pitta and Kapha, we still recommend doing them regardless of your dosha.

3. Gratitude Journaling

Take a moment to reflect on your day. Write down things you’re grateful for the day. Journaling is a positive practice that helps clear the mind as well.

4. Soothing Bath
