Suranadi ghritam is an Ayurvedic medicine for piles and other ano-rectal diseases.

 

Benefits of  Suranadi ghritam

 

Suranadi ghrutham combination is used either as acchasnehapana as a preparatory procedure to Ayurvedic Panchakarma (cleansing therapy) or as samanasneha in small doses after having Kashaya or other rookshana medicines for a while. It helps to regain health after the Rookshana (drying up therapies.

It is beneficial in hemorrhoids. Pain, constipation, bleeding, and other discomforts along with bulged pile mass can be managed with this formulation.

It liquifies the waste products accumulated in channels. It helps lower bad cholesterol and hyperlipidaemia.

It is useful in both bleeding and non-bleeding piles, but it is especially beneficial in piles with bleeding and pain. It helps to heal fistulae and fissures in the early stages. It can prevent the complications of these diseases, too. It enhances Agni (digestive fire), removes blockages in the lower part of Gastro Intestinal Tract and relieves constipation. By regulating the proper movement of Apaanavaayu, it gives relief to many types of aches and pains in the lower abdomen, back and hip area. It reduces the ulceration and inflammation around anus.

It has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions. This plant is used to treat gynaecological conditions. Patha is used in the treatment of chronic non-healing ulcers and sinuses. It is also used in the treatment of chronic skin diseases and in the treatment of poisonous bites.

Tragia involucrata Linn.

 

This plant is used in many conditions like wounds, eczema, scabies and other skin infections. It has anti-inflammatory property. It is used to treat piles, migraine, warts and rheumatism.

It is useful as an expectorant in cough. It relieves asthma and other respiratory diseases by clearing the airways and enhancing the movements of respiratory tract.

It has anti-diabetic effect as it helps reduce high blood sugar levels in blood.

It helps to calm the mind and improves sleep quality.

 

Bael/Bengal quince Vilwa

 

Aegle marmelos

 

It has anti-inflammatory properties and it is effective in peptic ulcer. It is a part of the main drug group in Ayurveda called Dasamoola (group of roots of Ten plants) which is famous for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

 

Kaattu mulak   Chavika Piper retrofactum Vahl.

 

It is useful in treating indigestion, abdominal colic, worm infestation, poisoning, anorexia, productive cough, asthma, bronchitis, fever, diarrhoea, IBS, haemorrhoids, fistula, chronic respiratory disorders, throat disorders, and rheumatic conditions.

 

Long pepper – root Krishnamoola

 

Piper longum

 

It is pungent in taste and hot in potency. It breaks down thick sputum and is beneficial in sinusitis and asthma. It is also useful in the treatment of worm infestation, infected wounds, ascites, enlargement of abdomen, distension of abdomen, splenomegaly, asthma, tuberculosis and other chronic respiratory disorders. It improves taste and relieves anorexia.

 

Wild celery Ajamojaka Trachyspermum roxburghianum

 

It has almost similar properties to Trachyspermum ammi (L.) SPRAGUE.

The seeds of this plant are used in the form of powder to treat worms. It acts as an appetiser, carminative and aids digestion. It is also beneficial in treatment of colic.

 

Panchakola

It is a group of 5 drugs, used as a combination in many ayurvedic formulations.

The drugs are,

1.       Long pepper- fruit Pippali Piper longum

 

It has carminative action and maybe used as appetizer. The fruit of Pippali are used in the form of powder to treat fever, diarrhoea, piles, cough, hiccough, asthma, hoarseness of voice, flatulence, colic, vomiting, acid gastritis, oedema, diseases of mouth, eye diseases, diseases of semen, diseases of women, jaundice, and earache.

Pippali choorna mixed with honey alleviates cough, dyspnoea, fever splenomegaly, and hiccough.

  • Constipation with mucous or sticky stool.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Indigestion.
  • Gas or flatulence.
  • Bloating.
  • Abdominal distension.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Common cold (acute phase during running nose).
  • Cough with thin white phlegm.
  • Asthma (chest congestion due to phlegm).
  • Weight loss (obesity).
  • Body aches with feeling of heaviness in the body.
  • High cholesterol levels.
  • Atherosclerosis.
  • High blood pressure due to hypercholesterolemia

These five drugs, together known as Panchakola, it is well- known for its potency to improve digestive fire and in clearing the blocked channels.

 

 

Ajwain Deepya Trachyspermum ammi (L.) SPRAGUE

 

The seeds of this plant are used in the form of powder to treat worms. It acts as an appetiser, carminative and aids digestion. It is also beneficial in treatment of colic.

 

Cardamom Ela Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton

 

It can help in controlling asthma. It is beneficial in teeth and gum infections, cataracts, nausea, diarrhoea, as well as cardiac, digestive and kidney disorders.

 

Cumin Jeeraka Cuminum cyminum L.

 

It is very good in improving digestive fire and immunity. It helps in curing various kinds of ulcers, IBS, diarrhoea and other disorders of the gut. It is used in the treatment of mild digestive disorders as carminative. It is useful as an astringent in Broncho pulmonary diseases.

 

Black cumin seed Krishnajeeraka

 

Nigella sativa

 

It is used for headache, toothache, nasal congestion and sinusitis. Beneficial in asthma and intestinal worms.

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. Fresh fruit is antilithic, constructive, cooling, diuretic and strengthening. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility. The dried fruit is demulcent, cooling, mildly expectorant, laxative and stomachic. It has a slight effect in easing coughs. It is used as a remedy for skin diseases and in diseases of the eyes.

 

Coco grass, Nut grass, Purple nutsedge Musta

 

Cyperus rotundus L.

 

It has marked anti-inflammatory action. It also has anthelmintic, antioxidant and antifungal properties. The drug improves lactation, relieves fever, burning sensation, and excessive thirst. It is also used in treating diarrhoea, dyspepsia and skin diseases.

 

Conessi Vathsaka/Kutaja Holarrhena antidysentric). Wall.

 

It has been used in bleeding piles, diarrhoea, eczema, fever and colic.  It is beneficial in amoebic dysentery and many other gastro-intestinal disorders.

 

Yellow gentian, Hellebore Katuka Picrorhiza kurroa

 

It is used for Dyspepsia, fever and in purgatives. Although it shows anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities, it is most valued for its hepatoprotective effect.

 

Atis root

 

Ativisha Aconitum heterophyllum WALL. EX ROYLE

 

It has anti-diarrhoeal, diuretic, expectorant, hepato-protective, anti-pyretic, analgesic, anti-oxidant, anti-flatulent and carminative properties.

Embelia ribes

 

It is an appetiser and mild laxative. It has carminative, stimulant, anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-cancerous and anthelmintic properties.

 

Indian sandalwood Chandana Santalum album

It is famous for its anti-tumour and anti-cancerous properties. It has a very expensive essential oil made from it, makes it famous in the cosmetic industry. It is an anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-proliferative agent. It is beneficial for treatment of acne, psoriasis, eczema, common warts and molluscum contagiosum.

Cilantro seeds Dhanyaka Coriandrum sativum Linn.

It is an anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, diuretic, and anti-pyretic. It improves digestion and absorption; it is good for heart.

Anar/Pome granate Maathulunga

 

Punca granatum L.

 It has a wide variety of uses. Medicinal properties of fruits and fruit shell are decided by its taste when ripe. Sweet ones balance all 3 doshas. They can cure excess thirst, burning sensation, fever, dosha in chest, throat and mouth. It is nourishing and aphrodisiac. It has antidiarrheal property.It gives moisture in the body, boosts intellectual power and physical strength.

Sweet and sour fruits are easy to digest, carminative, and improve digestion & taste. Sour fruits increase Pitta slightly, help in the cure of amavata and kaphadosha. 

Curcuma

 

Nisa Curcuma longa L.

 

 Turmeric is used to help with heartburn or bowel problems like diarrhoea, intestinal gas, and bloating. It is famous for its anti-cancerous and detoxification effects. It is widely used in skin diseases. Some may use it to help with memory problems or problems with the liver or gallbladder. It may also help to lessen swelling and help with signs of arthritis. It has marked anti-inflammatory and antiseptic action. 

Creeping oxalis/sorrel leaves Charngeri Oxalis corniculata L.

 It has anti-inflammatory, digestive, diuretic, anti-bacterial, and antiseptic properties. It is hepatoprotective. It is used in the treatment of many disorders of the digestive tract like peptic ulcer, diarrhoea, dysentery, haemorrhoids etc.

Take the prescribed kashaya, milk, buttermilk, swarasa of the prescribed herbs, and ghruta in an earthen pot.  Make it boil and add kalkadravya slowly mixing it well.  Then cook in the open vessel with low fire. Reduce the quantity into the quantity of ghrutha. Make sure to mix it in between with a ladle. Also, the fire should be kept low to make sure that all the active ingredients in the herbs needed are absorbed well into the water and ghee. Continue cooking and stir in between. Check the Paaka as per Snehapakavidhi. Once the desired Paaka is attained, filter the ghruta and keep it in air tight glass bottles after cooling. Ghrutha can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

Dosage and Usage of Suranadi ghrutham

Dosage:

 Generally, it is prescribed in OP practise as 5-15ml once a day.

It is said in text as one Pala or 48 gm in a person with profound digestive fire.

 It differs for Acchasnehapanasodhana) and vicharanasneha(samana)  

Utilisation :

Ghrutham is advised to take in empty stomach, once the ingested food is digested well and aahaararasa is formed well.

 

Exercices et yoga.

As Sooranadi ghrutham targets mainly ano-rectal organs and bleeding per anum, regular stretching and mild cardio exercises are advised. Also, specific yogacharya including naadisuddhi pranayama, bhujangaasana, pavanamuktasana is recommended.
