The causes may vary in person to person. Pain over the chest often alarms a serious problem but it may not always be a heart attack or something dangerous.

Itself as a symptom, chest pain may be caused by a number of issues. Not only heart related problems are the causative factor of chest pain but many a times it may be due to other reasons also. Heart related problems are the top most cause of chest pain, and is characterised by a vague uneasiness which may usually left un-noticed. The one which is linked with heart attacks or other serious heart problem may be presented along with shortness of breath, pressure/ tightness over chest region, cold sweats, nausea or vomiting and general weakness. A stabbing pain that spreads to the neck, jaw, shoulders, arm (arms) and back which usually becomes worse by exertion, fluctuating in nature denotes heart attack. Chest pain due to other health issues will be accompanied by distaste in mouth, regurgitation of food particles, dysphagia or tenderness over chest region. This kind of pain may be worsened by deep breathing or coughing, by changing positions and lasts for hours. Pain along with burning sensation behind the sternum may be connected with heart or stomach.

Pain associated with lungs are caused by pulmonary embolism, collapsed lung, pleurisy or pulmonary hypertension. It may also occur due to several other reasons like panic attack and Shingles (the latent infection of chickenpox).

Most of the time, it can be pacified by medications such as aspirin, artery relaxers, blood thinners, thrombolytic drugs, acid suppressing drugs or anti-depressants. Serious conditions may need surgical and other procedures like angioplasty and stent placement, bypass surgery, lung re-inflation and emergency dissection repair.

Ayurvedic Concept of Chest pain

Ayurveda explains chest pain as Hrudroga. It is classified into five according to the Doshas involved and clinical manifestation, namely Vaatika Paittika Kaphaja Sannipatika and Krimija.

Vaatika hrudroga is explained as recurrent and severe pain that comes and goes in the chest, along with throbbing, feeling of emptiness, immediate grief, fear, intolerance to sound, tremors and stiffness as associated signs.

Paittika hrudroga is the chest pain & stiffness along with excess thirst, giddiness, fainting, burning sensation, sour belching, fatigue, vomiting of yellow bile, and fever as associated complaints.

Kaphaja hrudroga feels the chest as heavy as if a stone is placed inside, stiff and with cough, loss of digestive fire, excess spitting, sleep, lethargy, anorexia and fever as related complaints.

Sannipaataika hrudroga develops when all of the three doshas are imbalanced & causing Hrudroga. It shows the signs & symptoms of all the three doshas.

Krimija hridroga is said to be very severe as the area gets infested by microbes. Severe stabbing pain will be felt in the chest along with darkness of eyes, fainting, nausea, dryness of mouth & itching as associated problems. There will be excess and abnormal saliva production.

Ayurvedic treatment for chest pain

Management of chest pain depends upon many factors like the cause, age of the patient, associated diseases, physical strength, imbalanced Doshas etc.

Vaatika hrudroga is managed by the intake of medicated oils with medicinal salts & other herbal combinations. Swedana(sweating therapies) are also indicated in suitable cases that reduces the pain with an immediate effect.

In PAittika hrudroga, first line of treatment is Virechana(therapeutically induced purgation with herbal formulations). Here the medicine is added with Draksha, Ikshurasa, Sugar, honey etc. After the purgation, Peyadi krama (restricted diet) should be followed without causing aggression of Pitta. External and internal cleansing therapies indicated in chest injury & fever should also be administered. Once the digestive fire is normal, medicated ghee preparations are given internally.

Kaphaja hridroga is managed by sweating therapies(swedana) followed by Vamana(therapeutically induced emesis with herbal formulations. After the obstructions due to the Kapha is cleared specific herbal formulations are given internally along with Pathya diet.

Sannipatika hrudroga is managed according to the symptoms manifested in each case.

Krimi hrudroga needs immediate &emergency medical attention with Sodhana9cleansing therapies, Langhana(therapies that help reduce body weight), Paachana(therapies that help better diegestion, absorption and assimilation). Anti-microbial and anthelmintic herbal formulations are also advised in these cases.
