PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF COMMON COLD IN BABIES

Rhinoviruses enter the baby’s body through the mouth, eyes or nose. The virus can spread through droplets in the air. It also spreads by direct contact with someone who has a common cold or by sharing contaminated objects. Increased nasal secretions cause a running nose.

DIAGNOSIS OF COMMON COLD IN BABIES

  • Diagnosis is based on the proper examination of signs and symptoms
  • Chest X-ray

  • Decongestant nasal drops or sprays
  • Antipyretics
  • Antibiotics – in the case of secondary bacterial infections

  • The common cold is a self-limiting disease. Symptoms subside within two weeks.
