Kanakasavam is an Ayurvedic medicine for cough, breathing disorders, and diseases of respiratory system. It is also useful in chronic fever and compromised immunity.

 

Benefits of Kanakasavam

It is beneficial in all the disorders of respiratory tract like acute & chronic cough, breathing disorders, asthma, bronchitis, COPD etc. This combination is advised to be taken in wounds and bruises of chest. It works as an expectorant and improves the lung capacity.

It helps to reduce recurrent chest infections in tuberculosis. It can be used in chronic diseases with compromised immunity like AIDS. It helps to correct malabsorption and deficiency disorders.

It is beneficial in chronic and recurrent fevers. It increases digestive power and thereby immunity.

Itnhelps in bleeding disorders and wounds & bruises of chest.

Ingredients of Kanakasavam

 

Thorn apple/Jimson weed Kanaka Datura stramonium L.

 

A famous anti-asthmatic herb. It is poisonous and is used after proper detoxification. It is used in the treatment of ulcers, wounds, inflammation, rheumatism & gout, sciatica, bruises & swelling, fever, asthma & bronchitis, and toothache.

 

Adathoda, Malabar nut Vrishamoolatwak

 

Justicia adathoda L.

 

 

It is an expectorant and is mostly used in respiratory conditions. It helps in treatment of skin diseases. It is also used in jaundice, fevers, headache and urinary infections.

 

Liquorice Madhuka/ Yashtyahwa

 

Glycyrrhiza glabra L.

 

It has anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant, anti-malarial, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-hyperglycaemic and hepato-protective properties.

 

Long pepper Pippali/Magadhi Piper longum

 

It has carminative action and maybe used as appetizer. The fruit and root of Pippali are used in the form of powder to treat fever, diarrhoea, piles, cough, hiccough, asthma, hoarseness of voice, flatulence, colic, vomiting, acid gastritis, oedema, diseases of mouth, eye diseases, diseases of semen, diseases of women, jaundice, and earache.

Pippali mixed with honey alleviates cough, dyspnoea, fever splenomegaly, and hiccough.

 

 

Yellow-berried nightshade Vyaghri Solanum xanthocarpum

 

It has anti-oxidant and anti-cancer activities. It possesses anti-asthmatic, hypoglycaemic, hepatoprotective, anti-bacterial and insect repellent properties.

 

Indian rose chest nut/Ceylon ironwood/cobra’s saffron Nagakesara Mesua ferrea L.

 

It clears kapha, it is beneficial in urinary tract infection, poisoning, rheumatoid arthritis, pruritus, and oedema. It is beneficial in the treatment of fever, excessive thirst, sweating, vomiting & nausea, bad body odour, skin diseases, herpes etc. It is useful in some types of headache.

 

 

 

Dried ginger Viswabheshaja

 

Zingiber officinalis

 

It is unctuous and hot in potency with pungent taste but becomes sweet after digestion. It is an aphrodisiac and balances Vata and Kapha.

It improves ability to taste and promotes digestion. Relieves cough cold and other respiratory problems. It is not a laxative, rather causes constipation.

Blue-flowered Glory Tree Bharngi

 

Clerodendrum serratum (L.) MOON

 

 

The plant is considered as having antitoxic and antiseptic properties. Juice of leaves is used with ghee as an application in skin conditions like herpetic eruptions and pemphigus. It is given in fever and is useful in sinusitis. The drug is also useful as an expectorant in respiratory diseases like asthma and cough.

 

Indian silver fir Taleesapatra Abies webbiana LINDL.

 

It has anti-bacterial, mast cell stabilising, anxiolytic, anti-tumour, anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive, and CNS depressant properties.

 

Fire flame bush Dhaataki Woodfordia fruiticosa Kurtz

 

It is an anthelmintic, in dysentery, leprosy, blood diseases, leucorrhoea, and menorrhagia.

 

Black grapes Mridweeka/Draksha Vitis vinifera L.

 

Grapes are a nourishing and slightly laxative fruit that can support the body through illness, especially of the gastro-intestinal tract and liver. Because the nutrient content of grapes is close to that of blood plasma, grape fasts are recommended for detoxification. The fresh fruit is antilithic, constructive, cooling, diuretic and strengthening. The fruit is also helpful in the treatment of varicose veins, haemorrhoids and capillary fragility. The dried fruit is demulcent, cooling, mildly expectorant, laxative and stomachic. It has a slight effect in easing coughs. It is used as a remedy for skin diseases and in diseases of the eyes.

Details zur Herstellung

As already discussed, Kanakasavam has 11 herbal ingredients, honey and sugar.

All herbal ingredients should be washed well and dried up in shade.

Take

Kanaka – 4 Pala

Vrishampoolatwak- 4 Pala

 

Madhuka

Vyaghri                             2 Pala in total (each herb in equal quantity)

Kesaram

Viswabheshaja

Bharngi

Taleesapatra

 

Dhaataki            – 1 Prastha

Draksha              – 20 Pala

 

 

in an earthen pot. Pour 2 drona (32 Prastha) of clear water into it.

Add

Sugar    – 1 Tulam

Honey   – ½ Tulam

It should be transferred into an earthen pot coated inside with ghee.  Mix all the ingredients well. Cover it with a clean white cloth and keep it closed and airtight. Keep it for 30 days in a dark place with low temperature. After 30 days, open it and filter through a clean white cloth. Keep it in an airtight glass bottle. Asavam can be used for a longer period of time without any preservatives.

 

Dosha Dooshya Vorherrschaft mit Roga Margas.

Kanakasavam is Kapha-Pittahara and anulomana.

It acts on aabhyantara rogamarga

 

 

Dosage and Usage of Kanakasavam

Dosage: 25-30 ml after food

Verwendung:

Arishtam is advised to be taken after food, once the ingested food and arishtam will digest together.

It is taken two times or three times a day immediately after food.

As Kanakasavam targets mainly respiratory system, following stretching exercises and specific yoga asanas like pavanamuktasana, vajrasana, bhujangasana etc for lower back and abdomen recommended.
