SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • Inability to distinguish between different colors especially shades of red and green or blue and yellow.

CAUSES OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • Age-related changes
  • Certain medications
  • Exposure to certain chemicals
  • Certain diseases like macular degeneration, diabetes, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis
  • Inherited color deficiencies

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

Gene mutations lead to premature destruction of cone cells in the eyes or production of defective cones making it difficult or impossible to detect differences between shades of colors.

DIAGNOSIS OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • History taking
  • Vision test
  • Examination of retinal changes
  • Ishihara color vision test

TREATMENTS OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • Wearing coloured filter glasses or contact lenses
  • Treatment for underlying pathology

PROGNOSIS OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • No treatment is available for the permanent cure of color vision difficulties.

COMPLICATIONS OF COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • Unable to perform the tasks that require color discrimination

  • Avoid food items that produce dosha imbalance like hot, pungent, salty and dry food, hard to digest. Because dosha imbalance aggravates the symptoms.
  • Consume a balanced diet rich in vitamin A
  • Avoid direct exposure to sunlight
  • Avoid exposure to dust and smoke

YOGA FOR COLOR BLINDNESS 

  • Nadi Shuddi Pranayam – calms the mind and gets relief from the eye irritations associated with color blindness  

The patient needs to be seated in a meditative posture with the head and spine erect, with the body relaxed. The patient has to close his one nostril (e.g. left nostril if using the right hand and vice versa) with the thumb and exhale completely through the other nostril. Again, he will have to breathe in deeply through the other nostril while the opposite nostril is still closed with the thumb.
